AM is the fifth studio album by English rock band Arctic Monkeys. It was produced by James Ford and co-produced by Ross Orton at Sage & Sound Recording in Los Angeles and Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California, and released in September 2013 through Domino. The album was promoted by the singles "R U Mine?", "Do I Wanna Know?", "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?", "One for the Road", "Arabella", and "Snap Out of It". It features guest appearances by Josh Homme, Bill Ryder-Jones, and Pete Thomas.
The album received critical acclaim, with critics praising its darker and groovier sound in comparison to the band's previous records. It featured in many year-end lists as one of the best albums of 2013, including the BBC who named it the best of 2013.[3] At the 2014 BRIT Awards, Arctic Monkeys won British Album of the Year for AM. It was also nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize and received a Best Rock Performance nomination for "Do I Wanna Know?" at the 57th Grammy Awards in 2015. NME hailed it the best album of the decade and, just a month after its release, ranked it 449 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Rolling Stone ranked it 346 in their 2020 edition of their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.

On 15 July 2013, the album cover artwork was revealed.[22] On 2 September 2013, Arctic Monkeys revealed a track titled "I Want It All" during a XFM radio show,[23] and exclusively played "One for the Road" on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show.[24]
"Do I Wanna Know?", the second single from the album, was released on 19 June 2013. The song received significant airplay, including joining BBC Radio 1's "B List", and later moving to the "A List". It was certified Silver in the UK, indicating an excess of 200,000 sales (becoming the fourth Arctic Monkeys single to do so), and has also been successful internationally.[31]
At the 2013 NME Awards, Arctic Monkeys were nominated for Best British Band. "R U Mine?" was also nominated for Best Track, and won the award for Best Music Video.[57] AM was nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize for best album,[58] becoming the third Arctic Monkeys album to receive the nomination, after their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, and its follow-up, Favourite Worst Nightmare. The album's second single, "Do I Wanna Know?", won the Best Track award at the 2013 Q Awards.[59] "Do I Wanna Know" was also nominated as the "Best Rock Performance" at the 2015 Grammy Awards.[60] At the 2014 BRIT Awards, Arctic Monkeys won in the British Album of the Year and British Group categories, becoming the first band to ever "do the double" (that is, win in both categories) three times (Coldplay and Manic Street Preachers did it twice).[61]
NME ranked AM number 449 on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, after it only being out for a month.[62] The magazine also announced its list of 50 Best Albums of 2013, with AM taking the top spot: "AM felt like a genuine evolution for the Monkeys, and one that wasn't without risk. Its success, however, rested on the two things that had always made them special: Alex Turner's wry way with words, and his way with a tune." In 2019, the album was ranked number 1 on NME's list of Greatest Albums of the Decade.[63] In 2020, the album was ranked at number 346 in the third edition of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[64]
AM boasted a great amount of riches on both counts, with NME writing "AM is the album against which everything else will now be measured."[65] 17 music journalists of the Polish media company Agora SA (Gazeta Wyborcza, Gazeta.pl, TOK FM) placed AM at number two in their ranking of 10 Best Foreign Albums of 2013, behind Arcade Fire's Reflektor.[66]
On 15 September 2013, the album charted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, having sold 157,329 copies, thus becoming the second fastest-selling album of the year, behind Daft Punk's Random Access Memories.[79] With the debut of AM on the chart, Arctic Monkeys also broke a record, becoming the first independent-label band to debut at number one in the UK with their first five albums.[80] Following the band's win at the 2014 BRIT Awards, the album charted at number two on the chart, behind Bad Blood by Bastille, who also experienced the "BRITs effect".[81] As of June 2019, AM has spent 300 weeks in the top 100 of the UK Albums Chart.[82]
The band's wider international fame came with the success of their critically acclaimed fifth album AM (2013), which was supported by the global hit "Do I Wanna Know?". It topped four Billboard charts and was certified platinum in the US. At the 2014 BRIT Awards, the album became their third to win British Album of the Year.[4] Their sixth album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018), was a major departure from the band's previous guitar-heavy work, instead being piano-oriented. It received a Best Alternative Music Album nomination at the 2019 Grammy Awards, their second to do so after Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.
In the United Kingdom, the band became the first independent-label band to debut at number one in the UK with their first five albums.[5] The band have won seven Brit Awards; winning Best British Group and British Album of the Year three times, becoming the first band to ever "do the double" (that is, win in both categories) three times; a Mercury Prize for Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, an Ivor Novello Award, and 20 NME Awards. In addition, they have been nominated for six Grammy Awards,[6] and received Mercury Prize nominations in 2007, 2013, and 2018.[7] Both Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and AM are included in NME's and different editions of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time lists.
In its first week of release the album sold 227,993 copies,[67] emulating Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not in going straight to number one in the UK Albums Chart, albeit selling 130,000 copies fewer than their record-breaking debut. The first two singles from the album Brianstorm and Fluorescent Adolescent were both UK Top Hits.[68][69] Favourite Worst Nightmare's first day sales of 85,000 outsold the rest of the Top 20 combined, while all twelve tracks from the album entered the top 200 of the UK Singles Chart in their own right.[70] By September 2013 the album has sold 821,128 copies in UK[71] and has since gone 3 platinum by 2018.[72] In the USA, the album debuted at number seven, selling around 44,000 copies in its first week.[73]
The band's fifth studio album, AM, was released on 9 September 2013.[145] The album was recorded in Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree, California, and features guest appearances from Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Elvis Costello's drummer Pete Thomas and Bill Ryder-Jones of the Coral.[145] Further, on 27 June, the band announced an eight date UK arena tour culminating with a homecoming gig at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield.[146] The band played at the 2013 Glastonbury Festival on 28 June as headliners at the Pyramid stage.[147] Arctic Monkeys also headlined the 2013 Open'er Festival in Gdynia, Poland and played on the main stage on 4 July.[148] On 20 July, the band performed at Benicàssim 2013.[149]
On 11 August 2013, the third single from the album, "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?", was released, with the B-side "Stop The World I Wanna Get Off With You".[150][151][152] It debuted at no. 8 on the UK Singles Chart on 18 August 2013,[153] making it the band's first UK Top 10 single since 2007's "Fluorescent Adolescent". The band streamed the album in its entirety four days ahead of its release.[154]
Upon the release of AM on 9 September 2013, the album debuted at number 1 in the UK album charts, selling over 157,000 copies in its first week.[163] As a result, Arctic Monkeys made history as the first independent label band with five consecutive number 1 albums in the UK.[164] The album received widespread critical acclaim and brought Arctic Monkeys their third nomination for the Mercury Prize.[165] The album also won the Brit award for Best British Album.[166] In the United States, the album sold 42,000 copies in its first week, and debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the band's highest-charting album in the United States.[167] In August 2017, AM was certified platinum by the RIAA for combined sales and album-equivalent units over of a million units in the United States.[36]
Arctic Monkeys could be on course for the fastest selling album of 2013 with their fifth studio release, AM, according to Official Charts Company data. 2ff7e9595c
